This is a question I often hear in my etiquette courses: How do I show my personality but still follow a business dress code?

I completely understand why this is a concern. Many examples of “business formal” or “business casual” attire often seem quite similar, and it can be challenging to find a balance between expressing your individuality and adhering to expectations.

Here are some tips I like to share:

The first step is to understand the culture of your industry and the preferences of those you’ll be meeting with. The level of formality can vary greatly depending on your environment. Are the people you interact with open to more variety in attire, or might they view anything outside of the dress code as unprofessional or disrespectful?

If you’re new to the company or just entering the workforce, it's wise to observe the general dress norms before making bold sartorial choices. In more conservative environments, it may be necessary to play it safe until you’ve established your credibility and built rapport.

2. Personalize Within the Boundaries
Once you’ve assessed what’s acceptable, look for opportunities to add a personal touch within the dress code. A pop of color—whether it's a vibrant tie, a patterned scarf, or a well-chosen piece of jewelry—can help you feel more "you" without breaking any rules.
